Chiho Aoshima

Chiho Aoshima is a Japanese artist, born in Tokyo in 1974, with no formal training in art (she graduated Department of Economics at Hosei University in 1995) belongs to Superflat movement, created by her master Takashi Murakami.

A member of the Kaikai Kiki team, she has participated in many shows among her Kaikai kiki peers Mr., Aya Takano or Chinatsu Ban in such important art galleries like Perrotin or Gagosian. She has also held solo exhibitions, mainly in USA and Japan but also in other countries like Spain or France. She has also flirted with fashion beginning with a collaboration with the Japanese designer Issey Miyake Spring/Summer collection of 2003.

Her art mixes surrealism with Japanese pop art and explores the darkest side of these movements. Mostly portrays women in surreal landscapes and dreamlike environments, and includes many supernatural elements such as ghosts or demons or a suspiciously-wild nature. Her work is mostly printed in large scale medias that can range from canvas or plexiglass to paper or leather, which she uses to highlight the depth and realism.

Aoshima's works are shown in Ackland Art Museum in North Carolina and in the Seattle Art Museum in Washington. She also has some permanent exhibitions in public spaces and her large works can be seen in New York's and London's subways and these images are part of her City Glow series.
