And Then x 727 (Vermillion SHU) is a work by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, one of the most significant names in contemporary art today. In this piece, two of his most iconic characters come together: "And Then", a somewhat unsettling yet charming figure with large eyes and an exaggerated smile, and "727", an abstract motif inspired by traditional Japanese art and manga.
The central figure of this series is Mr. DOB, a character Murakami has developed since the 1990s and who functions as his artistic alter ego. With influences from Mickey Mouse, Doraemon, and Sonic, DOB represents Japan's obsession with pop culture, but also the loss of identity in a world saturated with images. While his appearance may seem innocent or even cute, it conceals a critique of the superficiality and cultural emptiness of mass consumption.
This piece, in the vibrant vermillion hue (a deep red associated in Japan with spirituality and the sacred), perfectly reflects Murakami's Superflat style: flat surfaces, vivid colors, and a blend of pop art, manga culture, and conceptual art.
While at first glance it may seem simply playful or decorative, the work carries a deeper meaning. Murakami speaks to contemporary Japanese culture, marked by technology, consumerism, and a certain nostalgia, all through a visual language that is as accessible as it is sophisticated.
Signed and produced in a limited edition, And Then x 727 (Vermillion SHU) is a piece that stands out not only for its aesthetic strength but also for the unique universe it represents: one where the adorable and the unsettling coexist, and where the commercial transforms into art.
