Offset lithograph with cold stamp and high gloss varnishing on paper, hand signed and numbered by Takashi Murakami. Limited edition of 300 published by Kaikai Kiki Co. Created in 2010, the work’s circular format, 71 cm in diameter, immediately reinforces its strong decorative presence and its carefully orchestrated visual rhythm.
Kansei: Korin Red Stream belongs to a body of work in which Murakami revisits the language of traditional Japanese art through the lens of contemporary printmaking. The term kansei is often associated with sensibility, perception, and aesthetic response, making it especially resonant in a work that seems to privilege visual intuition as much as formal precision.
The reference to Korin suggests a dialogue with classical Japanese pictorial refinement, where ornamental flow, flattened space, and rhythmic surface become central expressive tools. Murakami does not quote that tradition literally; instead, he absorbs it into his own Superflat vocabulary, where historical memory and contemporary image culture meet on the same surface.
The vivid red movement implied by the title gives the composition a sense of energy and continuity, while the cold stamp and gloss varnish intensify its luminous, almost lacquered finish. These elaborate surface effects are also characteristic of many of Murakami’s editions, which are often produced in runs of 300 and distinguished by technically ambitious finishes.
This edition speaks not only to collectors of contemporary prints, but also to anyone interested in the way Murakami bridges Japanese visual heritage and contemporary pop sophistication.
