Joan Hernández Pijuan

Joan Hernández-Pijuan was born in Barcelona in 1931. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona between 1952 and 1956.

With an expressionist style, had his first exhibition in 1953, and two years afterwards Pijuan gets his first solo show at the Municipal Museum of Mataró. Shortly later the artist founded the Sílex Group. He moved to Paris in 1957 where he studied etching and lithography. It is around this time that his work began to take a geometric configuration in which everyday items appear lonely on plain backgrounds, usually green or gray and even framed in grids. Pijuan won't get back to Informalism until the early 80's.

Since 1977 he works as a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona, where he holds the position of fine arts professor since 1989 and where he is named dean in 1992.

In 1993 the National Center of Art Reina Sofia held a retrospective exhibition called "Spaces of silence". He died on December 28, 2005.

Hernández-Pijuan's work is part of the permanent collection of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and can be found in many other collections and international museums such as the Marlborough Gallery in London, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels at the Guggenheim Museum in New York , in the National Gallery in Montreal, or the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires.
