An exceptional round composition measuring 71 cm in diameter, The Golden Age: Hokkyo Takashi is a landmark piece from Takashi Murakami’s critically acclaimed Kansei series. Released in 2016 through his Tokyo-based studio Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., this artwork is presented as an offset lithograph combining a meticulous four-color process with a specialized cold stamp foil and high-gloss screen-printed varnishing. Each individual print from the scarce edition of 300 is hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
The work's title introduces a direct, sophisticated historical game: Hokkyo was a prestigious honorary title bestowed upon master artists of the Edo period, most notably Ogata Kōrin, a key figure of the traditional Rinpa school. By naming the piece after himself—Hokkyo Takashi—Murakami blends historical reverence with the ironic, self-referential humor that underpins his Superflat philosophy. Within the frame, a dense composition of smiling flowers and contrasting skulls unfolds against a shimmering, decadent golden background. This layout acts as a sharp, contemporary memento mori, balancing the playful optimism of commercial pop culture with deeper, ancestral meditations on life, mortality, and repetition.
Through this masterclass in technical finish, Murakami seamlessly bridges the conceptual boundaries between "high" institutional fine art and "low" subculture iconography. The vibrant ink layers contrast beautifully with the rich metallic reflections, transforming the traditional gold-leaf screens of ancient Japan into a modern visual landscape. Seen in this light, the piece also belongs to a broader conversation around pop art, Murakami’s visual universe, and the evolving language of contemporary print techniques.
