In ;La Cage, Bénédiction ou Malédiction, Sandra Chevrier confronts us with a question that seems to shimmer between the glints of gold and silver leaf: is this face a blessing… or a curse? As in her renowned La Cage series, the Canadian artist weaves real skin with printed paper, blending the intimate with the iconic, the delicate with the heroic.
The female face — monumental and serene — is interrupted by fragments of classic comic books, where superheroes, trapped in their own narratives, speak to us — more than we might expect — about the world outside the page. But here, there is something more: the touches of gold and silver leaf do more than embellish — they elevate. They shine like a crown or armor, but can also be read as precious scars, golden echoes of inner battles.
The “cage” is still present, as always in Chevrier’s work. Yet in this special edition, it gleams with a new ambiguity — as if the artist is whispering that what confines can also protect, and that what glitters does not always redeem.
La Cage, Bénédiction ou Malédiction doesn’t impose answers; instead, it leaves them suspended in the air, wrapped in gold, silver… and a question that lingers softly, like the echo of an ancient thought.
