Andrew Warhola was born on 6 August 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1949, he relocated to New York City, shortening his name to Andy Warhol and launching a prolific career in commercial illustration. His early collaboration with Tina Fredericks, art editor of Glamour magazine, led to high-profile commissions drawing women's shoes and advertising campaigns for prestigious publications, including Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
Warhol's institutional ascent began in 1952 with his first solo exhibition at New York's Hugo Gallery, showcasing drawings inspired by the writings of Truman Capote. Between 1953 and 1955, he designed avant-garde stage sets for a theater group on the Lower East Side, around the same time he famously dyed his hair silver, establishing his iconic persona. By 1960, Warhol pivoted toward fine art, executing his first paintings centered on comic strips like Dick Tracy, Popeye, and Superman, alongside consumer goods like Coca-Cola bottles. This pivotal shift laid the groundwork for his groundbreaking contributions to the emerging Pop Art movement.
The year 1962 marked a watershed moment when Warhol introduced his definitive paintings of dollar bills and Campbell's soup cans, works featured in the historic The New Realists exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery. In November 1964, he established his legendary studio, The Factory, at 231 East 47th Street. This period saw the production of Red Jackie—the genesis of his famous Jackie series—and his first European solo exhibition at the Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in Paris, which debuted the celebrated Flowers series.
In 1965, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania hosted his first solo museum retrospective. Though he briefly announced a retirement from painting to manage the multimedia alliance between Nico and The Velvet Underground, Warhol's international profile expanded, culminating in his first European museum retrospective at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1968. On June 3 of that year, Warhol survived a near-fatal assassination attempt by Valerie Solanas, an event that profoundly altered his personal and artistic outlook.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Warhol's status as a global media icon skyrocketed, turning his studio into the definitive epicenter for the New York avant-garde. During this prolific era, he championed the work of Keith Haring and engaged in a legendary, co-authored painting collaboration with Jean-Michel Basquiat. His artistic philosophy also resonated with international conceptual artists living in New York at the time, deeply inspiring a young Ai Weiwei during his formative years in the East Village.
After relocating The Factory to 860 Broadway, he fully resumed painting in 1972, focusing on highly sought-after celebrity portraits, political motifs like the Hammer and Sickle series, and existential themes in Skulls. His late career yielded masterclasses in printmaking, including the Reversals, Shadows, Myths, Endangered Species, and Ads series. Today, these portfolios remain among the most coveted fine art prints and multiples in the world. Following complications from gallbladder surgery, Andy Warhol passed away on 22 February 1987 at the age of 58, cementing his legacy as a titan of contemporary art history whose limited editions continue to define the modern art market.
